Newborn Photography

Newborns have to be one of my favourite photographic sessions!

The best time to capture your brand new baby is between 2 and 4 weeks - this is the time when newborns (supposedly) sleep the most.

Scheduling your newborn photography session should be done early - consider scheduling between 12-20 weeks. You’re wondering how you choose a date before baby has arrive aren’t you? Don’t worry, most photographers will schedule you for a period of time, it could be 2 weeks or 4 weeks. I like to schedule you from your due date, and I pencil you in my calendar for 4 weeks. This way, you can wait until you are settled in at home and feeling up to having photos taken before we confirm a set date and time.

You can have your newborn photos taken in the comfort of your own home, or in my studio. Having photographs taken in your own home can be much easier on any older children and takes the stress out of getting out of the house.

Photographing newborns can take some time, the photography session is based solely on them and their needs. If they need a feed, a change or a break, then that is what they get. A newborn session should be relaxing and a time for you to give extra snuggles and cuddles to any older siblings.

When coming to the studio for your newborn photos, you should try to schedule your session when baby is ready for a feed. When you arrive at the studio, you can change and feed baby and then they should be happy and sleepy for their photos (this isn’t always the case). A nice warm environment will help baby to feel relaxed, sleepy and comfortable, I like to have the studio on the warmer side, so be sure to wear layered clothing so you can take some off it’s too warm for you.

If your newborn photography session includes family photos as well, consider wearing neutral colours, and dress everyone in a similar shade (see my blog about what to wear for family photos for more info).
